| AMEDEO MODIGLIANI (1884-1920) With linear grace and soothing palette, the Italian painter, sculptor and draughtsman Modigliani is seen as an heir of Botticelli. Although his artistic output was limited in part by the war, and Modigliani exhibited little during his lifetime, his posthumous fame has made him one of the archetypical examples of a penniless obsessive, totally committed to his work. The reclining nudes, for which he is perhaps now most famous, were deemed erotic in the Art Deco period. Womanising, drink and drugs played major roles in his dissipated lifestyle, hastening his premature death of tuberculosis. |
