| ANDY WARHOL (1928-1987) One of the first major ‘celebrity’ artists, gaining an international reputation and commercial success with is bold and original pieces. The most famous has to be the Campbell soup cans, or perhaps the Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor or Elvis Presley pictures? With an enormous entourage, Warhol was a controversial figure in American art, a manager of a rock band The Velvet Underground, and film-maker and a social butterfly. His hedonistic lifestyle influenced such people as Jean-Michel Basquiat, LeRoi Newman. His bland persona and intriguing reputation for being rather intellectually challenged only fuelled his legend status. His death, after a routine operation, was followed by the revelation that he had left a fortune of around $100,000,000, much of it used to establish The Andy Warhol Foundation for the development of creative arts. |
