| ANDRE DERAIN (1880-1954) Derain was at the centre of avant-garde developments in Paris between 1900 and 1920, working as a painter, sculpture, graphic artist and theatrical designer. He was one of the creators of Fauvism, and an early enthusiast of Cubism, but his later work nods more towards the influence of the Old Masters; he has been described as a 'parasite' on the past and the present, artistically speaking, straddling two styles. |
