| BUONARROTI MICHELANGELO (1475-1564) Born into a wealthy Florentine family, Michelangelo is one of the most famous figures of the Renaissance period, known to be an unsociable ‘genius’, immersed in his work. The Pietà is one of Michelangelo’s most famous statues, an expressive and moving representation of a full-grown man lying in the lap of a distraught woman, and it is this beautiful sculpture that established the young artist in Rome. He returned to Florence to build on his reputation, creating such sculptures as David (1504) and paintings and frescos of immense scale and beauty. Most notable is the fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, a painstaking ordeal which took 4 arduous years to complete. The last thirty years of Michelangelo’s life was devoted to architecture, and in this field as well as sculpture, and painting, his reputation as one of the most influential artist of all time remains firm. |
