| CLAUDE MONET (1840-1926) Who doesn’t own a Monet print? Part of the Impressionist group, with artists such as Renoir, Sisley and Bazille, Monet was known as an exacting artist with perfectionist standards, and his love of the outdoors provided inspiration for the bulk of his enormous output. Monet was widely travelled, especially throughout France, and he settled in Giverney, on the banks of the Seine, in 1883. He ad previously rented a house, but prosperity enabled him to buy it, and he went on to build a studio in the garden in which he could construct and paint upon his enormous canvas. The famous ‘water-lily’ paintings were inspired by the lovely water-garden he built here, and the series was donated to the nation in the year of his death. |
