| EDGAR DEGAS (1834-1917) In 1855, the son of a wealthy French art-lover banker enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and went on to study the Old Masters in Italy. Initially influenced by historical subjects, he changed his style on meeting Manet in 1861, and began to concentrate on contemporary scenes with an Impressionistic slant. He had a special predilection for theatre and dance, and his famous Little Fourteen-year-old Dancer sculpture (the only sculpture he ever exhibited) is dearly loved today. During the last twenty-years of his life, Degas was virtually blind and lived a reclusive life; today, his place as one of the giants of 19th Century art goes unchallenged. |
