| Francis
Bacon (1909-92) Born in Ireland, Francis Bacon worked in London, Berlin and Paris before settling in London to be a painter, despite no formal training. Many who saw Bacon's first exhibitions were shocked at the images - half-human, half-animal headless subjects, sitting on wonky chairs in odd shaped rooms. Faces are smudged, bodies are twisted, and colours are fleshy and bloody. Bacon is widely accepted to be one of the most important international contemporary artists, known just as well for his homosexuality, hard drinking and serious gambling. |
