| Georg Baselitz 4. GEORG BASELITZ (1938-) In 1969, the German artist started painting the images in his colourful and energetic pictures upside down, challenging the conventional way we look at paintings. His paintings took a matter of weeks to complete; the gloopy paint drips down the canvas - his paintings are very 'masculine', in the same way that Jackson Pollock's are: the whole body has been engaged in producing their works. The friendly sculpture, Sliced Head of 1986 is an example of Baselitz having fun with his work - a bust of a head is indeed sliced and attacked wood, with a slap of bright pink paint right across the face. He created work that requires a tilt of the head to even start to understand. |
