| GUSTAVE COURBET (1819-77) When asked to paint an angel for a church, Courbet replied, "I have never seen angels. Show me an angel and I will paint one." The French painter was an influence on Realist painters, as he concentrated on the tangible reality of life, on things that could be seen. He painted mainly landscapes and portraits, particularly when in Switzerland during the remaining four years of his life; he had previously used darker, sombre colours when painting allegorical and religious scenes. |
