| JEAN-AUGUSTE-DOMINIQUE INGRES (1780-1867) The French artist was awarded a stay in Rome in 1807 and it was during his stay in the city that he produced some of his finest portraits, both of himself and his wealthy clients. Ingres reputation grew, as he became known for the sensuous contours and smooth lines. Ingres is also known for his paintings of bathers, such as the beautiful painting, The Valpincon Bather of 1808. In 1812 and the following year, Ingres received substantial commissions including two for Napoleons palace. Ingres moved from Rome to Florence, then back to Paris, receiving much honour and fame. In 1834, it was back to Rome to take up the Directorship of the French School in Rome, and stayed for 7 years. The Turkish Bath painting of 1863 was painted to wards the close of Ingres life, and is viewed by many critics as his best work. |
