| LEONARDO DA VINCI (1452-1519) Florentine artist, scientist, musician, designer and thinker, Da Vinci was the most accomplished man of the Italian Renaissance. Da Vinci was constantly on a quest of discovery, filling sketchbooks and notebooks and letters with ideas, theories, skeleton sketches and flying machines. Credited with establishing the idea of an artist as an intellectual thinker and not just a skilled craftsman, Da Vinci’s own art is exquisite in both subject and execution – the most famous of his paintings could be The Last Supper (c.1495), a fresco which deteriorates so rapidly it is constantly being restored, and is still hailed as one of the finest paintings in the world. The Mona Lisa is another. The story goes that Da Vinci died in the arms of the King of France, which, true or not, illustrates the enormously high status this genius has attained. Working in rivalry to Michelangelo and Raphael, Da Vinci’s reputation has, from his own times to the 21st Century, been one of the finest of any man. |
