| M C ESCHER (1898-1972) The Dutch graphic artist used sophisticated visual illusion with mathematical concepts to create brilliantly clever drawings. In 1964, an exhibition of his work was shown at the International Mathematical Congress, Amsterdam. Surrealist ideas also play a part in the work; in the 1960s, his work was especially popular with young people who took hallucinogenic drugs, as they felt that Escher's work was expanding their minds in the same way as the drugs they were taking. Most of his work is in a very striking monochrome but later work saw the introduction of hue and colour. His explorations of illusion and tessalations provide an opportunity to reflect and ponder the accepted physical norms and patterns around us. |
