| MARCEL DUCHAMP (1887-1968) The image of the white urinal signed R. Mutt, of 1917, known as Fountain, probably pops to mind on the mention of this French-American's name. His work was consistently controversial, though he produced very little. He virtually abandoned painting from around 1913, and used unconventional materials, as he became interested in the ready-made, and he made the very good point that anything can be classed as 'art' if we want it to be so. He became a legend in his own lifetime, a man with a keen sense of irony and humour, who revolutionized notions of art and beauty. |
