| MARK ROTHKO (1903-1970) Although Rothko was Russian, he is one of America’s most famous figures in art, as one of the creators of Colour Field painting. The huge expanses of exotic, hazy, flat colours, sometimes in parallel with another shade, lean towards Expressionism and Surrealism. The paintings were not, Rothko said, meant to be abstract. Rather, it was his aim to express basic human emotions through them, a sort of religious and sublime awakening. Poor, plagued with depression and solace sought in alcohol, Rothko’s paintings gradually became less colourful and bright to more sombre tones, using browns and deep, deep reds. His last paintings were a series of severe black on grey canvas, surely indicative of his depressed state which culminated in his comitting suicide in his own studio. |
