| PABLO PICASSO (1881-19730 Spanish genius, one of the most prolific figures of the 20th Century, his influence extending through all elements of the visual arts. The work produced by Picasso is often divided into movements or periods (The Blue Period, for example) though in fact, he was normally working on several styles and themes simultaneously. Picasso was a sponge, becoming a masterful drawer and draughtsman as a (somewhat precocious) child. Les Demoiselles d’Avignon of 1906-7 is seen as the turning point in art which led into Cubism; though not understood at the time, even by contemporaries such as Matisse and Derain, Picasso nonetheless had established himself as one of the most important figures in Modern art. Mythology, theatre, dance and the circus were all sources of inspiration for Picasso, who swung from frivolity and wit to sombreness and frustration through his works. With an output of work estimated at 20,000, some in museums dedicated to him in Barcelona and Paris, Picasso also wrote extensively. |
