| PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR (1841-1919) From Impressionism to a more solid, crisp, dry style of ‘The Umbrellas’ of around 1881, Renoir had a style that makes him one of the most popular of the painters of this age. His subjects – playful children, sensuous women and flowers – have an enduring appeal. Renoir said, ‘Why shouldn’t art be pretty? There are enough unpleasant things in the world’, and with this in mind he worked to his death, even sculpting by directing an assistant’s hand. |
