| RAPHAEL (1483-1520) Raffaello Sanzio, the Italian painter, architect and designer, one of the most important figures of the High Renaissance. In an age of formal training, the precocious Raphael was working independently by 1500, producing ambitious and sophisticated works influenced by Michelangelo and Leonardo. His most celebrated works are probably the Virgin and Child paintings, leading to a series of commissions for Christendom. Known as a sociable and amiable man, Raphael worked in Rome until his death, never completing the Transfiguration, which portends the Mannerist style. Raphael died a wealthy, admired and influential man, and throughout the centuries has been described as one of the great artist of all time. |
