| REMBRANDT (1606-1669) The most famous of Dutch painters, Rembrandt quickly became a leading portraitist in Amsterdam. His energetic works, all with an inimitable ‘glossy’ finish, include many religious works. Marrying in 1634, Rembrandt bought an imposing house (now a museum) and lived blissfully, though a succession of infant deaths in the family marred the happiness. His wife Saskia died in 1642, and in this year Rembrandt painted the stunning The Night Watch, though this title was adopted in the late 18th century, when the painting was so discoloured with dirty varnish that it seemed to be a night scene. This fortune and fame did not last in his lifetime; religious paintings overtook the output of portraiture, perhaps as an avenue of solace after the death of his beloved wife. Although he couldn’t remarry due to a clause in Saskia’ will, Rembrandt did live with another woman and had two more children. The prices for his art have continued to rise, making him as important, if not more so, than other masters such as Raphael. |
