| SAMUEL COURTAULD (1876-1947) Not an artist, but an industrialist and art collector who, with Lord Lee of Fareham and Sir Robert Witt, founded the Courtauld Institute of Art in 1931. The Institute was a specialist centre in Britain for the study of art history, and the collection owned by the gallery is phenomenally important, including works by Rubens. Samuel Courtauld wanted art students to work in close contact with the work they saw, so it was his wish that the previously separated collections were all brought together and housed at Somerset House in the Strand, London. |
