| SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK (1599-1641) Regarded as one of the greatest Flemish painters of the 17th Century, along with his friend Reubens. The Flemish robustness of his paintings was toned down throughout his life, particular influenced by Italian works, and he went on to produce some of the finest portraits of the time. He was a painter to King Charles I, from whom he received a Knighthood, and we see the King and his court through van Dyck's eyes. The artist had a huge influence on portrait painters throughout history from this time, particularly Gainsborough who thought he was fabulous. |
