| THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH (1727-88) An individual genius in British art, Gainsborough became a prominent portrait painter. His landscapes are beautiful; his paying subjects not always so, but he rose in fame to become a Royal painter, even though his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds was appointed King’s Principal Painter. He drew inspiration from lots of different places and sources – most obviously the Dutch Masters, Flemish landscape painters and van Dyck. He was notoriously laid-back, often finishing commissions extremely late. His fluid brushstrokes perhaps indicate that he enjoyed his painting as much as his sitters enjoyed the finished article. |
