| VINCENT VAN GOGH (1853-90) Van Gogh was a troubled man, chopping part of his ear off in 1888 after an argument with his dear friend Paul Gauguin, and was deeply spiritual, even training for the ministry until 1880 when he realised that his true vocation was in painting in order to bring consolation to humanity. Sunflower pictures form only part of the portfolio of one of the greatest and most influential painters of all time. He was obsessed with colour, and the uses it had to convey various emotions and expressions, and was most successful when using broad, swirling brushstrokes in his energetic paintings. Van Gogh sold only one canvas during his lifetime and died from the results of a self-inflicted bullet-wound. |
