| WILLEM DE KOONING (1904-97) One of the major figures of Abstract Expressionism, de Kooning was born in Holland and became an American citizen in 1961 having lived in the country for forty years. By the time he showed in his first one-man show in New York in 1948, de Kooning had developed his style into an abstract, exhaustingly energetic one, retaining some suggestion of the figure in his work, which was comparable to that of Jackson Pollock. Although enormously influential on younger artists, by the 1950s he was regarded as a little past-it artistically speaking, and had honours heaped on him from 1960s onward as if to distract him from painting. This didn’t work, as he continued painting and sculpting until he was in his eighties. |
