| WILLIAM MORRIS (1834-1896) The English social reformer, painter, designer, craftsman defined art as ‘man’s expression of his joy in labour’, and his aim was to produce hand-crafted items for the masses. However, the Industrial Revolution meant that mass produced good were far cheaper, so Morris’ designs were in reality only available to the wealthy few. The Arts and Crafts movement, during which Morris, along with Burne-Jones, Rossetti , Forde-Maddox and others established his manufacturing and decorating firm, is still an enduring style, and the popularity of Morris’ fabrics and designs continues today, though now much more widely available. |
