| WILLIAM POWELL FRITH WILLIAM POWELL FRITH (1819-1909) English painter who captured contemporary scenes depicting everyday Victorian life. His most famous must be Derby Day (1858), hanging in the Tate Gallery London. The large painting tells a story, depicting with clarity and detail the various social levels of the day; Powell Frith is almost a historian. In his own day, he enjoyed enormous commercial success, and his work was so well visited at the Royal Academy that it had to be railed off from the admiring public. |
